I'm not sure that protecting the main page is a good idea at this early stage. It could be off-putting to users who don't realise the site is editable because the first page they see is a protected one. Unless you are experiencing large amounts of vandalism, I would recommend keeping it editable. Protection of pages should really be a last resort rather than something which is done unnecessarily.
